10 Underrated Albums By Huge Bands

9. Goats Head Soup - The Rolling Stones (1973)

The popular assessment of this record is that it represents the decline of the Rolling Stones. It wasn't as well rounded as Exile on Main St. and it lacked the originality of Beggars Banquet. As the '70s drew on, the Stones became derivative. By the '80s they had jumped on the synth pop wagon - in no small part due to Jagger's infatuation with the records David Bowie was making at the time. In many ways, this album was the band's last hurrah at making relevant and succinct rock tracks. And for that reason, it leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

The Stones can be accused of putting one two many ballads on the record. There are certainly moments that feel over bloated and tiresome. Notably, track five, contains one of Jagger's more unnerving studio moments, as he whispers "Angie" into the microphone. It's best to skip this number... But for all that, the record has its virtues.

100 Years Ago, is a melancholic and retrospective number, with a groove enriched by some deliciously wah infused guitar leads. There are boogies to be had from the track Hide You Love, and Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), might be one of the band's coolest tracks of the period. The album is noted for swaggering guitar parts, peacocking around each other, and horn sections that help drive many of the choruses.
