10 Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of The 2000s
8. Slob - Weezer
The career trajectory of Weezer had been bent all sorts of ways ever since they reassembled at the start of the '00s. Though they managed to make two masterpiece albums with their self-titled debut and Pinkerton, the hatred towards their sophomore effort led them to go on hiatus and course correcting on the Green Album. Things were back on track though...it was now time to experiment.
Across Maladroit, most of the songs are a bit left field than what you might expect from these nerd rockers, with funk influences on Burndt Jamb and even amazing flirtations with alternative stuff on Death and Destruction. Of all the weird experiments though, Slob has got to be one of the most hardhitting songs that Rivers Cuomo would ever write. Picking up where he left off on Say It Ain't So, this seems to follow the same character following in his father's footsteps and becoming a degenerate wasting the day away drinking.
This is also a great example of Weezer really using dynamics well, as each verse slows down and builds gradually up to each chorus, almost creating some sort of musical wave whenever it hits. Though Weezer were about to face some dark times with the release of Make Believe, would it have killed them to go down this rabbit hole one more time?
