10 Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of The '70s
9. Rock Candy - Montrose
The music community never really found themselves short of hard rock bands at the start of the '70s. With Led Zeppelin leading the charge, you could find another act brandishing loud guitars and a golden-god like frontman trying to make a name for themselves left and right. Though Montrose do have somewhat of a cult following, their single Rock Candy is one of the greatest slowburns of the decade.
Being one of the most underrated guitarists of his generation, Ronnie Montrose is an absolute monster on this track, as he toes the line between feeble guitar riffs and over the top freakouts reminiscent of what you would hear on cuts like the Lemon Song from Zeppelin. Whereas the namesake might be from the guitar player, the real magic comes from the debut of a singer by the name of Sammy Hagar.
Recruited when he was still in his teens, Hagar is every bit the star he turned himself into on this track, as he commands the stage like he has been playing for a decade. Despite the more high energy cuts you would find on a Hagar solo record or Van Halen release, this song is lowdown and dirty, as Hagar sings about his carnal desire like the bluesmen of old. Seeing how many hair bands cite this album as a blueprint, this is the one song that deserves to be remembered as much more than just an influential footnote.
