10 Unheralded Covers That Deserve More Recognititon
1. 4 Chords - The Axis Of Awesome (Orignal: Various Artists)
Right, confession time. This one's a bit of a cheat as it's not a cover of one song but one song covering forty-seven songs in just under six minuets. But Australian comedy rock trio The Axis of Awesome take a well known musical curiosity and turn it into the ultimate tour de force of a comedy cover.
I remember playing bass in a band when the guitarist turned to me in the rehearsal room during some down time and asked me if I had heard of "the four magic chords". I then sat in stunned silence as he explained it to me then demonstrated the concept on his guitar, and that same reaction is the one I see on people's faces when I play them this song.
"The Four Magic Chords" refers to the I-V-vi-IV chord progression that makes up the bulk of or the catchiest parts of so many songs across every genre in any given time period. There are so many that the band can alter this song live to include songs not in this official version (a full list of all the songs they use, both in this version and live, can be found here).
The song manages to take a musicians' in-joke and demonstrate it to the uneducated in a way they can understand. It's also being a genius arrangement where every song is perfectly placed to the point that it stands in it's own right as a stunning song.
Anyone could have done this, yes; but I doubt they'd have done it as well.
