10 Unheralded Covers That Deserve More Recognititon
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Paul Anka (Original: Nirvana)
This is possibly the most divisive entry on the list due to the reverence Nirvana is held in by their fans, but, nonetheless, this cover of their anthem by swing legend Paul Anka deserves more recognition. Just approach it with an open mind, a sense of humour and an appreciation of the ironic and you might just find you like it.
While the swing album of rock/pop/metal covers was nothing new by the time he got around to it in 2005. Pat Boone had done it in 1997, Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine had been around since 2000 and many of the songs covered had pre-existing swing versions released by other artists before featuring on this record.
But the lyricist of Frank Sinatra's anthem 'My Way' added something unexpected and new to his album 'Rock Swings'. In his cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' takes the song back in time in an effort that's both infectious and knee slapping fun.
Once again the aforementioned concepts of how you front it out and balls help this to be as good as it is; Anka sells the song like it had always been written in this style. I like to slip it into swing playlists for events and see who even notices what song their actual dancing away to (very few do).
You've got nothing to lose by giving it a go, for that you have Paul Anka's guarantee. Unless, of course, you live in Tennessee; I hear it's void there for some reason... .
