10 Unheralded Covers That Deserve More Recognititon
7. Sunday Bloody Sunday - Richard Cheese And Lounge Against The Machine (Original: U2)
Sometimes the secret of making something that works is having the balls to pull it off in the first place and a case can be made that it took some serious balls to pull this cover off.
To take a song that is a reflection on the feelings caused by The Troubles in Northern Ireland in general (and Bloody Sunday in particular) and reinvent it as an upbeat mambo lounge song may have been seen as disrespectful to those sentiments. But Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine had the balls to see it through.
And it pays off. This is a fun take on a dark song and it will raise a smile from those of us with certain senses of humour. It's infectious, it's vibrant and your toes will start tapping without you even noticing.
Having released ten albums of lounge covers since 2000, it's fair to say that the band's back catalogue is hit and miss (sometimes due to execution or sometimes due to the personal taste of the listener). But when they hit, as is the case with this song, they really hit. This song oozes fun and you'd need a heart of stone to not raise a smile as you listen to it.
