10 Unheralded Covers That Deserve More Recognititon
6. Enter Sandman - Motorhead (Original: Metallica)
Motorhead covered a lot of songs over the years, such as 'God Save the Queen', 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Highway to Hell' amongst others. Scroll down to the comments on the YouTube videos of any of these songs and you'll find at least one comment along the lines of "once Lemmy covers your song it's not your song anymore".
Never is this sentiment truer than with this cover of Metallica's signature tune, recorded in tribute to a band that Lemmy respected for giving Motorhead the recognition they deserved as one of their bigger influences (a point made repeatedly to near the point of nausea in his autobiography 'White Line Fever'). In the process Lemmy has claimed this song and delivered a harder, grittier yet true to source version.
To further hammer this point home, compare Metallica's covers of Motorhead songs (they have versions of 'Damage Case', 'Stone Dead Forever' and 'Overkill' in their repertoire) to the originals. They're somewhat lacking in the sheer ballsy raw power that Motorhead brought to every song.
Then compare this version to the Metallica original and you'll realise that it's those same qualities that really elevate what was already a standout tune in the Heavy Metal cannon.
After doing so I wager the only people who don't see this as the definitive version are the most hardcore of Metallica fans.
