10 Unheralded Covers That Deserve More Recognititon

5. Hotel California - Majek Fashek (Origianl: The Eagels)

Majek Fasheek is a Nigerian Reggae artist who is credited as being one of the first Nigerian artists to perform Caribbean Reggae as opposed to the indigenous hybrid versions that were the norm in his country. Hero worshipping Bob Marley to the extent that, not knowing his own birthday, he adopted the date of Marley's birth as his own.

Majek is known for trying to emulate his hero through his vocal performance and by using the same equipment and techniques to record his music as Marley did.

These facts are partially responsible for this cover version often being wrongly attributed to Bob instead of Majek; though it must also be said that a few other reggae versions of 'Hotel California', including one by Marley's own son, are also wrongly credited to Marley.

Given that the song was written under the working title of 'Mexican Reggae' it isn't too much of a stretch of logic to make a reggae version of 'Hotel California'. Given his emulation of Bob Marley's vocals and recording style, this song genuinely sounds like it could be a lost Bob Marley demo.

So it's the nearest we'll get to a Bob Marley version, who (despite many reggae versions of this song being credited to him) never recorded a version of it. And that saxophone part is awesome.
