5. Happy Hour - The Housemartins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ehden6aPl0 What's any playlist without a classic in there somewhere? The Housemartins were a short-lived group popular in the 1980s whose lyrics featured the healthy mixture of Marxism and Christianity. This was mainly down to the singer Paul Heaton's leanings and to his credit they never came across overly preachy. My chosen track is one that I have been reminded of recently having watched The World's End, the third and final chapter in Edgar Wright's Blood & Ice Cream Trilogy. The film had a fantastic 'Madchester' soundtrack and its closing credits featured said track, The Housemartins 'Happy Hour'. The song itself seems to tell a bizarre tale of going out on the town with your boss and being disgusted by the behaviour of those you work with. This interesting take on lyrical narrative aside, the song is unrelenting in its upbeat sound. It ends on the repeated chant that 'it's happy hour again' and in merry old England where the only thing to do when it's not sunny is visit a pub it becomes a good track to start your night on, throw it into a playlist to pull yourself out of your winter woes I guarantee its success.
