10. Through The Never: Hard Rock Invades The IMAX Cinema
In 2013, Metallica took on their most ambitious project to date: creating and financing their own concert film, shot entirely for the IMAX film format and in 3D. With a budget of over $36 million dollars, Through The Never is easily the most expensive rock film ever created, and a severe risk for any band to take, even for the musical gods of Metallica. http://youtu.be/N4IhWJ8r7_4 Their risk mostly paid off, although not financially. Through The Never was an ear-shattering and earth-shaking musical journey that not only had several strong musical performances, but also a fun narrative story to accompany the concert that was taking place. Critics and fans alike agreed that the IMAX project was a great representation of the Metallica live show, but the box office receipts would not reflect those successes. With the limited number of established IMAX theatres currently in existence, Through The Never grossed only a mere $3.5 million in the United States, and another $4 million worldwide, and so for an overall haul of just under $8 million dollars; the film did not even remotely recoup it's production budget. But Metallica showed the world that again they are not afraid to take huge chances and change the way things are done; Through The Never remains another example of Metallica pushing the envelope as they returned the big rock music opus to cinemas worldwide, being the first to do so in IMAX.
