10 Ways Metallica Changed Rock Music

9. Making Career Introspection Hip

10 years ago Metallica released the third documentary film of their career, entitled Some Kind Of Monster. But this film was unlike any other musical documentary that had ever been produced: the film followed the band on their journey of rediscovery of one another, and their collective love for their music. The film chronicled the time immediately following Jason Newsted's departure from the band after nearly two decades as their bassist, and how his absence, coupled with James Hetfield's alcoholism, nearly ended Metallica's epic career. http://youtu.be/aShnuQsuBzU Some Kind Of Monster is a film like no other. So many bands are afraid to admit their faults and confront their demons, whereas with this film the remaining members of Metallica attack their issues head-on and in front of the world: by seeing a therapist and having the entire experience recorded. At times it is uncomfortable to watch as they revisit Dave Mustaine's abrupt departure during the early days of the group in the early 1980's, to confronting James about his own alcoholic demons, and on into bringing on a new member of the band, all while crafting their most critically divisive record to date, St. Anger. Some Kind Of Monster is proof that even the heaviest of bands can struggle to survive, and Metallica showed the world that it's okay to regroup - even publicly - on the way to being reborn.
