10 Ways Metallica Changed Rock Music

8. The 30th Anniversary Gigs: Legacy Celebration Redefined

There are few bands anywhere in the world that have been together for three decades, and there are even fewer rock and roll acts that can claim the same milestone. There are but a few that come to mind, and they are all legends in the rock industry: The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and U2 for example. And in December of 2011, Metallica joined that legendary rock pantheon, pulling out ALL the stops to those in observance by holding a huge 30th anniversary celebration across three gigs at the Fillmore Theatre in their hometown of San Francisco. http://youtu.be/0242h3iwNyU This celebration of Metallica's legacy was done only as they could do it: big, brash, and full of surprises. From reuniting with their original lineup from before the No Life 'Til Leather cassette demo (complete with Megadeth's Dave Mustaine), to the return of Jason Newsted, and onto being accompanied by some of the most legendary names in rock music history like Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Halford, Metallica spared no expense and blew the doors off in honour of their 30 year history. It was an unprecedented event, and something we as fans are likely never to see again, but Metallica celebrated this milestone as only they know how: by going big and over the top, one more time.
