10 Weird Backwards Messages In Rock Songs
2. Empty Spaces - Pink Floyd
No one in their right mind is going to call something like the Wall passionless. Working diligently to get the project done, this entire rock opera from Roger Waters and the rest of Pink Floyd takes the entire idea of conceptual rock and puts it through its paces, with every bit of music having a shot from slowburns to full on bluesy rock. If you're including every facet of this man's psyche though, you're going to have some subliminal messages in the cracks as well.
When going through some of the interlude tracks, songs like Empty Spaces were meant to set the mood as well as give fans some brain candy. Being at the point in the story where Pink is starting to isolate himself from society, you can easily just look at these backwards vocals as the voices in his head or the worms that are trying to burrow into his brain.
If you put this baby in reverse though, you do get a bit of a reward for your efforts, with one of the band members saying "congratulations, you've just discovered the secret message." Though it might not mean much to your average fan, this is the kind of validation that some of the more completist music nerds love. As much as Floyd may have been the thinking man's rock band for a while, they at least respected the time and effort that fans put into looking for the ins and outs of their music.
