10 Weird Backwards Messages In Rock Songs

3. 665 - Soundgarden

By the time the '90s rolled around, the conversation around demons being a part of rock and roll had gotten way too out of proportion. Though we did have some shock rockers coming out around the same time, the PMRC was clearly fighting a losing battle trying to convince people that rock and roll was to blame for all of the violence in the world. Even as the grunge movement started to make things serious, you had Soundgarden making fun of the concept on their first record.

As if the title alone wasn't a bit of a giveaway, this entire song was trying to mock people who were trying to looking too much into the lyrics, with the idea being that 665 must be a pretty powerful number if the devil owns 666. When you listen to these supposed satanic messages, Chris Cornell is actually a lot more wholesome than you realize.

Whereas most of the past accusations of rockers say that they love Satan, Cornell is actually directing all of his love to Santa in this one, where you clearly hear him calling out to his Christmas king. They also doubled down on the goofiness later down the record, with 667 getting into some more shenanigans. As far as dark lords are concerned, there is only one overlord in Chris Cornell's life, and that man has a long white beard and a workhouse full of elves.
