10 Weirdest Cover Songs In Rock Music History
5. Mercyful Fate - Metallica
Over the course of their "sellout" phase, Metallica never really forgot where they came from. As much as albums like Load and Reload may have sounded like they were watering down their sound, they were still the same rough and tumble metal guys who loved listening to their old Diamond Head records whenever they could. When they got the opportunity to put out a covers record though, they couldn't decide which Mercyful Fate song to do. The solution: just do all of them.
Clocking in at over 11 minutes, this song is a crash course in what made Mercyful Fate appealing to these guys in the early days, taking riffs that were really ahead of their time upon their release and putting some real punch behind them. Being the Load era, the production of this is absolutely stellar, with each little fragment of songs like Evil and Curse of the Pharoahs bleeding into one another without a care in the world.
Though you can definitely tell when they had to put a few songs together, this feels like Metallica in their element, taking some unstoppable riffs and making for a pure musical experience whenever you put it on. These guys already had all the money that they could have asked for at this point, so this was their way of giving back to the musicians who helped shape them into who they are today.
