10 Weirdest Cover Songs In Rock Music History

4. The Nurse Who Loved Me - A Perfect Circle

Anyone who was trying out A Perfect Circle after listening to Tool was in for a hell of a surprise on Thirteenth Step. Outside of Maynard James Keenan's singing, this was a far cry from the kind of music coming from Lateralus, with those long songs being replaced with some moody metal bombast. In between the songs about the dangers of addiction, they found the perfect cover song to drop into the mix on the Nurse Who Loved Me.

While Failure might not have been known to the masses outside of their hit Stuck on You, The Nurse Who Loved Me is a much bright and sunnier affair than something you would associate with A Perfect Circle, almost bringing in a Beatles style slant to the songwriting. The scariest part about this cover though is the fact that Maynard and Billy Howerdel do very little to the initial arrangement of the song.

All of the different melodic structures are in place, with Maynard straight up crooning on the back half of this song. What makes it scary is where it falls on the album, being right at the point where the main character is starting to give in to his addiction. In essence, this is a love letter to the nurse that's giving him everything he needs, whether it's good for him or not. It might help him to stay sane for the time being, but those vices might be slowly killing you the further you go down that rabbit hole.
