10 Weirdest David Bowie Songs
7. Station To Station - Station To Station (1976)
The title track from the album of Bowie's most troubled period, 1976's Station To Station sees Bowie blend together elements of the two trendiest genres at the time, Disco and Progressive Rock, and infuse them with Krautrock, a genre Bowie had become particularly fascinated with at the time.
The Starman's longest song opens with just over a minute of the sound of a train departing a station, before the ominous marching beat of the composition's first half kicks in. The making of Station To Station was an incredibly unhealthy period in the personal life of David Bowie, who as a result cannot remember a single thing about recording or making the album Station To Station.
The second half of the song then settles into a more straight ahead disco jaunt with some great melodies and a great vocal performance. It also introduces us to Bowie's most controversial character and persona, the Thin White Duke, an incredibly dark character whose existence and demeanour reflected Bowie's personal life at the time.
For his headline set at Glastonbury in 2000, Bowie brought back the Thin White Duke one last time, treating fans to a rare performance of the song Station To Station in full.
