10 Weirdest Replacement Members In Rock History
1. Chester Bennington - Stone Temple Pilots
There are a only a handful of successful bands that have managed to survive a drastic lead singer change. Unless your name is AC/DC or Van Halen, you're really tempting fate when you have the voice of the band walk out on you and you manage to make the magic happen again with someone completely different. Or if you're Stone Temple Pilots, just find another super successful singer and bring him into the mix.
The first time that the non vocal STP members changed singers with Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone, the results may have been a little bit rough around the edges. When Scott Weiland decided to call it quits a second time though, bringing in Chester Bennington from Linkin Park was definitely a mixed bag, especially when Chester was still working with his old band on the album the Hunting Party at the same time.
Though the mini album High Rise was definitely good for what it was, you can't help but listen to these songs and feel like Chester isn't finding his lane that much. While he definitely shows up to sing his ass off on most of these songs, tracks like Black Heart just sound like Chester singing in the same kind of voice that Scott was doing around the time of Tiny Music. Whereas some singers like to pay tribute to their predecessors in whatever way they can, there's always a fine line between paying tribute to someone and actively ripping them off.
