10 Weirdest Replacement Members In Rock History
8. Buckethead - Guns N Roses
There's a good case to be made that the original magic of Guns N Roses ended the minute that the original lineup split up. Although Steven Adler's ousting may have been forgivable during the Use Your Illusion sessions, any album by the LA legends without Slash or Duff McKagan in the fold felt like blasphemy for most fans. Axl Rose didn't give a rat's ass what people thought though, and the revolving door of replacements led to one of the oddest dynamic duos in rock history.
As much as Bumblefoot gets the credit for being the touring guitarist for Guns N Roses in the wake of Chinese Democracy, Axl Rose originally had Buckethead as the stand in for Slash when the album was still in development. Compared to Slash's lyrical guitar solos, Buckethead almost felt like going in the exact opposite direction, playing a million notes a minute and having a strange stage presence just by his appearance.
And if you thought that Axl Rose was known for some excessive rock star behavior back in the day, that was nothing when you look at what Buckethead requested when playing his parts on Chinese Democracy, from wearing a bucket on his head to requesting that a chicken coop be set up in the studio so that he could take breaks during recording when he felt uncomfortable. In the years since though, the original core of Guns has made up a little bit, with Duff and Slash teaming up with Axl to give fans the real GNR again. For a brief moment there, we had the Axl and Buckethead show, which feels like it would make for a better cartoon that it would an actual rock band.
