10 Worst Debut Albums By Amazing Rock Artists
2. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Red Hot Chili Peppers
It might surprise you to learn that everyone's favourite shirtless Californians have been making albums since 1984. That's even more of a surprise when you realise how little love is out there for the their debut release.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers (which is the name of the album, whereas the band are just called Red Hot Chili Peppers) was recorded under tumultuous circumstances.
It was being produced by Gang of Four member Andy Gill, who was at odds with the band over the album's musical direction. In fact, he straight up hated some of the songs, which made things more than a little awkward.
The end result was an album that sounds really washed-out. Compared to some of the demo tapes that are available from this time, the Chilis are lacking the oomph that made them such a big name on their local live scene.
Also, to quote music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine, it "didn't quite gel into a cohesive album", which detracts massively from the listener experience.
This might have been a decent album under different circumstances, but the Chilis were capable of much better and they went on to prove that.
