10 Worst Genre Switches In Rock Music History

8. The King of Limbs - Radiohead

Not every genre switch necessarily has to be just for a cash grab though. Sometimes you just decide to switch up the formula, make a few changes to your sound, and just see where it takes you in the studio. And if there's any band that we really trusted with taking a risk like this, it had to be Radiohead.

After all, ever since drawing a line in the sand of their sound on Kid A, Radiohead made it their calling card to take risks with their sound, and nearly knocking it out of the park every single time. When it came time to record the King of Limbs though, their decision to dig their feet into the sounds of trance music made for a bunch of loops that tended to feel a bit hollow. Compared to the more ambient stuff that we've heard on previous records, it's hard to latch onto anything, especially when the run time is the shortest for any Radiohead record to date.

It's not like you can't see what they're going for either. On songs like Bloom and Codex, you can at least see the same band that made the more expansive tracks of the '00s, except confined into a much more compact musical space. Even though we can commend them for making the record they wanted to make, the result is definitely a mixed bag to say the least.
