10 Worst Genre Switches In Rock Music History
9. Tickets to My Downfall - Machine Gun Kelly
Part of the beauty behind the old pop punk albums of the '00s was just how innocent everything seemed. Even though critics liked to clown on people like Blink 182 and New Found Glory for sounding a little bit whiny from time to time, you could always feel the genuine emotion on display here. So how about we take that kind of aesthetic and bring it to a guy who is just trying to make a quick cash grab?
That's not to say that Machine Gun Kelly doesn't have at least some admiration for pop punk. After getting laughed out of hip hop by being destroyed by Eminem, his latest offering Tickets to My Downfall feels like him trying desperately to make something work in a new genre. Although he might be making all the right moves and the songs sound decent, there's nothing about it that seems authentic.
Even with bringing in titan Travis Barker to produce the album, this feels more like MGK just decided to call in a few favors to help him make something that resembled an album like Take Off Your Pants and Jacket or American Idiot. To add insult to injury though, he's been known to call some of the up and coming bands out for not being as authentically punk as him. At this rate, once the guy gets booted out of pop punk, we should look forward to when he moves on to making a bluegrass record.
