10 Worst Hard Rock Cover Songs Of All Time
7. Gone Away - Five Finger Death Punch
One opportunity bands have when covering a song is to take it out of its respective genre. By molding it into your own formula, your fans might get exposed to a slew of different music they might not have sought out otherwise. There's a certain beauty in mixing up a song's arrangement, but you will not see any of that here on Gone Away.
Coming from Five Finger Death Punch's laundry list of covers, this slow and meandering version of the classic by The Offspring sounds like these bro-rrific metalheads are trying everything they can to make this punk song sound deep. On the original recording, you can hear the desperation in every word Dexter Holland is singing, but Ivan Moody's monotone croak just sounds like he wants to turn in his final vocal before checking out and heading to the gym early.
The song would get credit for at least trying to switch up a classic song, but one listen to this track just makes you think that Five Finger are just aching for the same success that Disturbed had with their Sound of Silence cover a few years prior. As far as hard rock goes, this is just sad background music that you play around the bros if you want to feel introspective. Yes Mr. Moody... every time we hear this song, heaven is so far away.
