4. She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
The amount of post grunge schlock wasn't one for intellectual lyrics at the best of times. After all, since the regular grunge ballads were difficult to understand, how the hell was the second wave supposed to make up for that? While the lyrics may have been a bit dodgy in the late '90s, Puddle of Mudd had another idea: what if we take the post grunge and mix it with the problems of the nu metal crowd?
As far as Puddle of Mudd's debut, songs like Control and Blurry are at least fairly competent in delivering their respective messages, that being both anger and slightly inebriated anger. When it comes to She Hates Me though, these are the kind of lyrics that would have gotten you laughed out of your first band practice in high school. Suffice to say, Wes Scantlin has been unlucky in love and has a few choice words to say about it.
Going from one chorus to the next, Scantlin just takes the piss and proceeds to scream She Hates Me until you in turn feel angry for having listened to it. Not even having enough to fill the chorus, you have to resort to La Las just to make the rest of the melody work. Rock would eventually recover from this post grunge haze, but when you excused lyrics like this, you have your work cut out for you.
