10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The 1970s
9. Modern Times Rock And Roll - Queen
Worst Offender: "Get your high heeled guitar boots and some groovy clothes, get a hair piece on your chest and a ring through your nose."
Queen is a band that really doesn't need any lyrics to get their point across. While Freddie Mercury's tenor can get anyone to feel something, it helps when songs like "Somebody to Love" and "Stone Cold Crazy" actually have some overt meaning behind them. Though every member of the band contributed to the Queen sound, the lyrics take a bit of a dip when they were handed off to Roger Taylor.
Across the band's first album, songs like "Liar" and "Great King Rat" have led us on epic stories, but "Modern Times Rock and Roll" feels like it is meant to be filler. When broken down, the groove of this song is absolutely amazing, with the band taking a more bluesy direction and really pushing the boundaries of what hard rock was. On the other hand, Taylor's turn on the mic shows him bringing pretty generic lyrics to the table, as he plays the role of a man fed up with the rock and roll scene in his town.
Though the premise itself is already flimsy, the inclusion of such choice lines as "high heeled guitar boots" and "feelin like a long Sunday School cruise" make the song stick out like the sore thumb on the album. Queen had much loftier material to sift through later, but there are a little bit of hard edges on this tune.
