10 WORST Metallica Songs Ever
1. Purify - St. Anger
Is it any surprise to anyone that we're going back to St. Anger once more for the worst Metallica song? The album is one of the most questionable releases in metal music and something that even the most hardened Metallica fans have a hard time defending. Though there are a few decent cuts on the record like "Frantic" and "The Unnamed Feeling," "Purify" is about as ear-piercing as the band has ever gotten.
At the outset, the detuned sound of the verse is not necessarily a shock considering the rest of the album we have already sifted through, but the chorus is where things end up going very wrong. Once James hits the first note of the chorus, the voice crack is too painful for most metal fans to bear. Never before has Hetfield's been described as calm, but this is the one instance where the Metal God's throat sounds like a batch of dying cats.
As opposed to just being boring or just having the snare problems, "Purify" is the song that you can play to virtually any music fan to show them how bad this record is. Metalheads are known to be able to withstand some harsh stuff, but why anyone would want to subject themselves to this is absolutely mind-boggling.
