10 Worst Number One Rock Albums Of The 1980s

5. Mirage - Fleetwood Mac

In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released Tusk, an absolutely insane collection of experimental songs that painted them as a group in the middle of an artistic renaissance.

Three years later, they put out Mirage, which was pretty much the exact opposite.

In many ways, Mirage was doomed from the start, as it was coming off the back of the aforementioned Tusk, then Rumours before that, and then Fleetwood Mac's monumental self-titled album before that. The chain (ha) had to break at some point, and Mirage, with its good but not great selection of songs, was that point.

Mirage came at an interesting time for the band, as several of its members had recently embarked on solo careers before coming back together to record. Stevie Nicks had had her own number one record with Bella Donna just one year earlier.

Perhaps this is why they took a much less taxing approach to the music, as their hearts were elsewhere.

It's not like Mirage is a total bust, though; Gypsy is on this album, which is a banger, and it's the most recent Fleetwood Mac album to reach the top spot, spending five weeks there in 1982.

Every cloud, eh?
