10 Worst Number One Rock Albums Of The 1990s
6. Secret Samadhi - Live
US alternative rockers Live have released one live album in their time and, somehow, they didn't call it "Live Live". Talk about a wasted opportunity.
This group from Pennsylvania benefitted hugely from the rise in popularity of darker, grittier rock music across the 90s. Their second album, which came out in 1991, only managed number 73 in the charts. Its follow-up, 1994's Throwing Copper, went eight times platinum and gave the band their first of two number ones.
The second was 1997's Secret Samadhi, named after a state of meditative bliss. Clearly someone had been copying Nirvana's homework...
It enjoyed just the one week as king of the hill, wedged between albums by LeAnn Rimes and Howard Stern of all people, thanks to singles like Lakini's Juice, Rattlesnake, and Freaks.
Secret Samadhi is one of those 90s rock albums that does not hold up. There's very little credibility to it, as it feels like Live are simply jumping on the bandwagon of other, more established acts. Few of the songs have any staying power, which might be why they've all but vanished from the scene today.
Maybe Live Live will see the light of day at some point, but it doesn't look likely.
