1. Metallica/Guns N Roses in Montreal
The pairing of Guns N Roses and Metallica on one bill felt like it had the potential to be the greatest tour in history. Since both bands were coming off of some of the greatest albums of their respective careers, we were in for some of the most hard edged rock and roll that the world had ever seen in a single night. Then again, when you have Axl Rose as part of the equation, nothing is going to go completely smooth.
Before we get to Guns, let's back up to Metallica's performance in Montreal, where James Hetfield left in an ambulance. After playing the intro to Fade to Black, James misjudged his footing and ended up getting roasted after standing over a canister that would shoot up pyro during the set. Metallica's set ended then and there, with James being rushed to the hospital to get medical attention while Guns was left to finish the night off strong.
This looked like the golden opportunity for Guns to save the day by going out and playing a blistering set, only for Axl to get his diva attitude on. After taking hours to transition from Metallica's to Guns' stage setup, Axl went onstage for 4 songs before complaining of voice and monitor problems, with the rest of the band following after him. That turned out to be the final straw for the crowd though, going into a full riot after being promised a show and getting two halves of them instead. As much as Canada has a reputation for having extremely nice people, we've found out that Axl Rose is apparently their breaking point.
