10 Worst Rock Band Member Replacements

9. Joe Lynn Turner Replaces Ian Gillan - Deep Purple

Deep Purple are one of those classic rock bands that have gone through members like an ordinary person goes through tissues.

The line-up has chopped and changed so many times over the years that it would struggle to recognise itself in the mirror if it were sentient. The version most people are familiar with is Mark II, which lasted from 1969 to 1973 and featured Ian Gillan on vocal duties.

Gillan has taken a few breaks from the band over the years, including one that began in late 1989. Joe Lynn Turner, former vocalist with the band Rainbow, was named his replacement and, unfortunately for Joey, things did not go well.

Turner's one and only album with Deep Purple, 1990's Slaves and Masters, was far from a classic. It just didn't click with him on the mic and, in late 1992, Turner was let go.

Who took over from him, you ask? Ian Gillan! He made his Deep Purple comeback shortly thereafter and has been a part of the band ever since.

That's gotta hurt - like the musical equivalent of someone dumping you to get back with their ex.
