http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QD5n98R_nk Youre at karaoke and you see the shy guy in the corner whos been eyeing his gal-pal all night, the one who just sees him as just a good buddy. His name gets called up and nine out of ten times you can guarantee that hes going to launch into To Be With You, staring straight at her the whole time. Everyone raises an eyebrow and wonder how hes singing it so well. Never mind the fact that he listens to it on a daily basis, not just practicing the lyrics but feeling them. Truth is its probably been twenty years since a woman swooned to this song but it doesnt change the fact that To Be With You still connects with people in some way. Maybe its the ridiculous catchiness of that guitar strumming. It could also be that the chorus is so well written, people were singing along to similar highs and lows before it even existed. Or perhaps its just the one and only time that people wish they could deliver a string of words as passionately as Eric Martin. Does the karaoke serenade work? Of course it doesnt. But guaranteed everybody in the audience went home and downloaded To Be With You, and wont tell anybody about it.
