12 '70s Hard Rock Albums All Fans Should Own
1. The Stooges - Raw Power
Iggy Pop’s seminal band released only three albums in their first iteration, but the progression they showed over a four year stretch is exceptional. Their sound was honed across the records from dirty proto-punk to muscular hard rock, and this, their third record, was the culmination of that.
This was the first collaboration between Pop and David Bowie, who was brought in to smooth out the record, which was proved impossible due to the stripped back recording process of the luddite Stooges.
“Polished” isn’t something you want from a Stooges record, though, and this album lives up to its name. Opener “Search And Destroy” has one of the great opening lines in rock and a fierce, jagged lead guitar. "Penetration" sounds exactly how you’d imagine an Iggy Pop song with that title would sound, and the title track takes a great groove then kicks it to bits as only The Stooges can.
Bowie would later curate Iggy’s sound further, but The Stooges’ first swansong is all their own work, an out of control band whose sound couldn’t - and shouldn’t - be softened.
