12 '90s Hard Rock Albums Everyone Should Own
1. Faith No More - Angel Dust
Angel Dust was the first Faith No More album to include significant input from recently hired vocalist Mike Patton, and the ever-inventive singer was sure to stamp his vision all over it. Faith No More were coming off the back of “Epic”, a catchy breakthrough single, and they made the bold move to follow it up with something completely different.
Their fourth album is among the most varied of their career, an eclectic mix of styles held together by one of the tightest and often funkiest bands in alternative rock. Patton’s vocal work is always original but he’s in rockstar mode for much of this record, delivering anthemic performances on highlights “Everything’s Ruined” and “Midlife Crisis”.
They’d cause fans to reassess at every turn, mixing heavy takes like “Land Of Sunshine” and “Smaller And Smaller” with surprisingly faithful Commodores covers. It’s the sound of a band delighting in refusing to be categorised, and among the most creative and well realised records of the decade. It’s still hugely influential.
