12 Best Hamilton Songs

1. The Room Where It Happens

It was alluded to earlier and here it finally is at number one. Like Hamilton as a whole, The Room Where It Happens should not work. How can political negotiating between founding fathers, be in any remote way entertaining?

Burr dictates the Compromise of 1790, where Hamilton negotiates the passing of his financial plan, in exchange for teh US capital moving from New York City to the Southern States. Boring right? No.

Act 2 is generally considered the weaker part of Hamilton but when this song starts, things really start to pick up.

It's one of the few songs that heavily feature Hamilton, Jefferson, Maddison and Burr and thus combines all of music associated with those characters, creating a perfect blend of jazz, pop and show tunes, that's incredibly catchy and, surprisingly, fun to dance to.

Miranda's real masterstroke was telling telling the story from Burr's perspective, where his jealously of Hamilton takes over him and he decides to stop 'waiting for it' and get involved.

The line: "I've got be in the room where it happens," has however taken on a new meaning, now a statement of people's desperation to see Hamilton live on stage and how difficult that is to do.

There may be more popular songs in Hamilton, but The Room Where It Happens is for me the perfect combination of music, lyrics, vocals, character work and choreography. This is Hamilton at its best.
