12 Best Hamilton Songs

6. Burn

Amongst all the politics, there is a heart-breaking romance at the core of Hamilton and no song hits harder than Burn.

The most traditional show tune in the entire musical, Burn shifts the narrative back onto Eliza, who, having learned of Alexander's affair through The Reynolds Pamphlet, decides to burn all of her husband's love letters in an attempt to remove herself from history.

There isn't much information on Eliza Hamilton during this period of history, so Burn doubles as a commentary for the lack of historical records for important women in history.

But even though Miranda is forced to take a lot of dramatic license with this song, it remains one the pivotal songs in the soundtrack, especially because of its final lyrics: "I hope that you burn."

With minimal instrumental music and no ensemble dancing in the background, Eliza takes centre stage, emerging from the 'Helpless' girl in Act 1, to a woman taking control of her own destiny.

It's an incredibly powerful moment for Eliza (as well as Phillipa Soo), who up to this point in the story had played second-fiddle to her sister Angelica.
