8. Hanging Tree - Queens Of The Stone Age

For most Queens of the Stone Age fans, Songs for the Deaf will forever be known as the band's magnum opus. The entire album gives you the feeling of taking an intense ride through the desert with bizarre and eerie twists and turns around every corner. On a tracklist full of dark subjects, "Hanging Tree" may just be the most disturbing of them all.

The song starts in an odd time signature, already throwing the listening for a loop with the riff's unusual fluctuations. While it's been the norm for Josh Homme to take vocal duties, Mark Lanegan is the singer for this outing as his voice drips through the mix like a feral ogre. The lyrics seem almost sexual in nature, but in the sense of having a stalker lurking around the corner looking to capture you.

For its strange vibe, the song has one of the most adventurous Homme guitar solos while also displaying some powerful drumming from Dave Grohl. This song has enough sleaze and menace to it than most shock rock bands have across their entire discography. For Queens though, this was just another pit stop as the desert expands as far as the eye can see.
