12 Best Hard Rock Drum Solos

9. Pictures Of Home - Deep Purple

If you were a Deep Purple fan, you already knew the amount of talent the members had long before Machine Head. Across albums like In Rock and even singles like "Black Night," the entire band were true masters of their craft who took hard rock to peaks that were unheard of at the time.

You'd think you're in for another powerhouse record with Machine Head, but "Pictures of Home" comes on with Ian Paice delivering one of the greatest drum fills to come out of the British rock scene. The bludgeoning that he gives the kit in the first few seconds is something that many aspiring drummers are still trying to figure out. Given that the song is in an atypical shuffle feel compared to the other tracks, this kind of maniacal performance really prepares the listener for the different sounds that will unfold for the rest of the track.

Bassist Roger Glover described Paice's intro as "sheer madness," but when you slow it down, you realize there is a very calculated beat that ties everything together without going too over the top to be coherent. That being said, when it comes to describing the concept of insanity through music, this intro certainly fits the bill to a tee.
