8. Indians - Anthrax

Charlie Benante was a true gift to the drumming community once Anthrax hit the scene. His technique, while not as insane as someone like...say...Dave Lombardo, always kept you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire tune.

As they went into the studio to cut their seminal Among the Living album, the guys hit upon one of their greatest tunes revolving around the concept of Native Americans being mistreated by foreigners in the Colonial period of American history. When it came time to start the song, the band figured a drum intro would make a great overture for this twisted story they were about to tell.

The drumming intro has gone down in metal legend at this point, with Benante pounding away on the toms toms to create a tribal beat that sets us out on this wild journey. The percussion feels so elemental that it's not until you the harmony guitars come in that you realize that you're listening to a thrash metal song.

When it comes to the live performance of this track, Benante almost uses his rhythm as a weapon to get the audience moving before the inevitable mosh pit kicks in. It may not have been a typical metal opening, but "Indians" takes you on a musical journey that you won't soon forget.
