7. Queen - Flash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfmrHTdXgK4 Once upon a long ago, rock bands scoring movies was a regular occurrence. Italian prog barbarians Goblin used to cook up all manner of sinister voodoo for Italian horror master Dario Argento, the transcendental sounds of German space cadets Popol Vuh were regularly sought by indie pioneer Werner Herzog, and with stadium-filling heavyweights The Who and Pink Floyd licensing feature films to portray their rock operas, the 70s and early 80s were a fertile period for rock and celluloid. This little beauty comes from the 1981 fantasy sci-fi Flash Gordon, a hammy little camp-fest that's well worth a giggle on a Sunday afternoon. Queen match the movie's pantomime costumes and reality-divorced melodrama every step of the way, making it a case of good soundtrack casting you could say. Suggested punching pattern: The opening is impossibly tense with the kick drum and bass locked together in perfect synchronicity. When the singing starts, it's time to down tools, but only for a handful of seconds as the bare backing of bass and drum take over once more. You may fancy a spot of abbreviated air guitar too, although this isn't recommended for drivers who haven't yet mastered the art of steering with no hands.
