12 Greatest Duos In Hard Rock
11. The White Stripes
The entire hard rock scene seemed to be fractured at the end of the millennium. With nu-metal and pop-punk still dominating the mainstream, you couldn't really break through the rock scene unless you had a whiney singing voice or a tortured backstory to put across in your lyrics. Rather than cower to the trends, The White Stripes emerged from Detroit to become one of the greatest bands of the modern age.
Instead of playing some radio-friendly jam, these guys were aiming to bring rock back to the garage, with a blistering sound that felt like the song was going to come off the rails at any moment. The amount of sonic force was so intense that many people were shocked when they realized the band was made up of two people. With just Jack and Meg White at the helm, these songs became the blueprint for the new wave of retro throwback bands like the Strokes.
While many seem to just focus on Jack's stellar songwriting, Meg's primitive drumbeat is right where it needs to be, as it guides Jack's melody along and serves the song to the fullest. You could make the case that the band could benefit from another member, but when the results sound this honest, why use anybody else?
