12 Greatest Duos In Hard Rock
10. Flea/Anthony Kiedis - Red Hot Chili Peppers
At the end of the '80s, most of the rock world was still in pretty boy mode. From bands like Duran Duran dominating the pop charts to the hair metal of Poison still ruling the rock crowd, people had to either look pretty or cake the makeup on if they wanted to have a shot at breaking the big time. The Red Hot Chili Peppers don't really fit too snuggly in that category, but their ability to weave sounds together made them spokesmen when moving into the next decade.
Throughout most of the band's tenure, the lineup has been a bit of a revolving door with the exception of bassist Flea and vocalist Anthony Kiedis. Growing up as friends in school, these guys came together on a whim when a mutual friend suggested Kiedis step up to the mic at one of the band's shows. When combined with the manic bass runs of the Chili's sound, Kiedis' half-singing, half-rapping style fit right in.
Though they reached the top of the rock heap, these two had to deal with a fair amount of turmoil, from the death of mutual friend Hillel Slovak to the departure of guitar artist John Frusciante. Even if a hundred more shakeups occur during the band's run, Kiedis and Flea have that internal chemistry that won't be shaken any time soon.
