12 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '90s
11. Anthony Kiedis - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Out of all the bands coming from the underground in the early 90's, The Red Hot Chili Peppers defined what it meant to be truly alternative. With each track, the band were taking elements of funk, hip hop, punk, and rock and turning it into one glorious noise. While many bands point to members like John Frusciante and Flea for sparking that initial magic, Anthony Kiedis is the personification of the Peppers' unwieldy blend.
As opposed to cribbing from the rock gods of the past, Kiedis is a musical entity all his own, with one of the most original deliveries in rock. Throughout every Chili Peppers tune, Kiedis fluctuates from a hip hop infused tone to a more straightforward rocker croon. Right when you think you have him nabbed down on something like the hard hitting "Suck My Kiss," there are also songs like "Otherside" that give you a peek at the wounded drug fiend of days gone by.
From the sunshine of the melodies to the rhythmic assault of his flow, Kiedis' vocal range was unleashed when he took to the stage, where he bounced off his fellow bandmates like a pack of rabid animals let loose. The members of the Peppers fit together like pieces in a puzzle, but Kiedis is the closest approximation to the lush sound of California.
