12 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '90s
7. Scott Weiland - Stone Temple Pilots
The confusing part about the 90's was that it wasn't really that cool to be a rockstar anymore. Even when many rock bands were getting famous left and right, the main "celebrities" from these bands did everything they could to shrink their ego down instead of playing the traditional frontman role. Though the grunge scene tended to frown on macho lead singer posturing, Scott Weiland managed to make his oddball stage presence known to us all.
Starting with Core, Weiland tended to fit pretty snuggly into the grunge category, with the "Plush" video making him look like Eddie Vedder with orange hair. As the band played on though, he was able to channel his more ambitious side into the mix. After the release of Purple and Tiny Music..., Weiland had transformed himself from an alt-rock wannabe to a glam-influenced rockstar, with songs like "Interstate Love Song" as his calling card.
When he took to the stage, Weiland also found different ways to engage the audience, as he did everything from prowling the stage like a feral animal to even using a bullhorn to sing his lyrics on songs like "Crackerman." The age of the pompous rockstar may have been on the way out, but Scott Weiland was able to remind us why we loved that rockstar behavior all those years ago.
