12 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '90s
6. Billie Joe Armstrong - Green Day
Though the alternative scene seemed to finally be gaining some traction in the early 90's, everything came to a grinding halt after Kurt Cobain committed suicide. For a lot of hard rock kids, this was the death knell for the grunge scene and a loss that many wouldn't recover from. It wasn't clear where to go after this, but Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day helped point the way forward.
With the release of Dookie, Green Day exploded onto the rock scene with some of the catchiest tunes ever created and a smartass bite to their delivery. While the band always worked as a democracy, Armstrong was quickly standing out as one of the most unique frontmen of the time. Instead of the downtrodden demeanor of most of the grunge musicians, Armstrong was one of the few rockstars of the time who wasn't afraid to engage with the audience.
Look no further than the band's legendary performance at Woodstock 94, where Armstrong uses the horrid weather to have a mudfight with his audience. Even into the 2000's, Armstrong went from being everyone's favorite brat to one of rock's most engaging songwriters on albums like American Idiot. Green Day were definitely a change of pace for the times, but they were just what the decade needed to pull themselves out of the grungey darkness.
