10. Van Weezer - Weezer
Before you start sharpening any knives, I will be the first to admit that Weezer has been anything but hard rock in the past few years. Their unique brand of pop rock has been floating way too far on the side of pop with albums like The Black Album and Pacific Daydream. At the same time, there are plenty of reasons for fans of harder rock to be excited for this next outing.
As opposed to the more sleepy singles to come out of Weezer's past releases, the single from their upcoming album "The End of the Game" is one of their heaviest in years, with a guitar solo complete with tapping and insanely fast runs. Van Weezer may seem like a cheeky pun at the moment, but this opening cut shows that Rivers Cuomo definitely has the chops to back it up.
When going into the studio, Cuomo said that he saw this record as the band's chance to go all-out and make a kickass hard rock album like their heroes in Van Halen. Although they started in pop punk, Weezer's musical taste have always been on different sides of the spectrum, with Cuomo being the staunch metalhead. It's anybody's guess as to how the execution will turn out, but what we have so far looks pretty promising.
