12 Most Divisive Rock Albums Of All Time
9. Load/Reload - Metallica
For many metalheads, Metallica have been the band people love and hate in equal measure. Though the band have given us some of the greatest metal records of the 80's with Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, later sins like St. Anger have left many metal fans hanging their head in shame. Even though true metalheads single out the Black Album as the band's most polarizing release, it's what they did directly after that made fans question their fallibility.
While The Black Album may have been considered a cash-in by thrash fans, it was the album that brought the band a whole new legion of fans around the globe. Once the band regrouped after their eternal tour, the riffs that they came up with next had a different bent to them. Instead of the wall of sound approach on previous records, these songs were more slinky sounding, pulling from the band's love of bluesy material and hard rock.
Both Load and Reload have some great material across their runtimes, but the actual execution left many new fans crying "sellout." Though there are some spotty moments on each release, these two records would have been a worthy follow-up to their predecessor if they were cut down to one solid record.
