12 Most Hated Classic Rock Songs (On Great Albums)
7. You Gotta Move - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones are such a legendary band that their great work almost has to be split up into different periods. After the band's early years as one of the hottest groups of the British Invasion, the time between the late 60's and early 70's saw them releasing some of the most indelible bluesy material they would ever create.
Sticky Fingers certainly falls into that classic territory, with singles like "Brown Sugar" undercut by stately ballads like "Wild Horses." There are fantastic cuts all over this record, but the cover of the blues standard "You Gotta Move" feels out of place with the rest of the standouts. The idea of covering this song sounds great at first glance, given the band's penchant for covering blues greats from Robert Johnson to Muddy Waters. The vocal inflections that Mick Jagger was trying to emulate here seem to have good intentions, but sometimes fall onto the side of mockery rather than respectful.
The band were known for their immaculate touch in the studio at the time, but this song feels like it's been ripped straight out of a performance in the middle of a dive bar. It's still great rock and roll, but this era of the Stones career doesn't really wear it well.
