12 Most Hated Hard Rock Songs (On Great Albums)
2. Stupid Mop - Pearl Jam
By the mid-90's, Pearl Jam were one of the biggest names in music. After the mega success of their debut album Ten, the band ended up getting just as much success on their followup Vs. without so much as a music video being made. Even when Eddie Vedder wanted to flex his artistic muscles on the band's third album Vitalogy, the group still ended up writing rock staples like "Nothingman" and "Spin the Black Circle."
Given the random assortment of styles across the record, most fans probably weren't expecting the most climactic of musical endings. What no one could have expected though was "Stupid Mop," a 8-minute long sound collage compiled by Vedder. The origins of this track come from Eddie Vedder's experimentation while recording the sounds of patients in a mental hospital. The track was so polarizing that even the band were taken aback by just how avant garde it was when played back for the first time.
Coming at the tail end of the record, most fans usually just stopped the record after the track "Immortality," refusing to let the sound collage sully the album experience. It was definitely a time of change for Pearl Jam, but not all of these cuts were able to move people like "Alive" did years ago.
