12 Most Hated Hard Rock Songs (On Great Albums)
10. Iron Gland - Alice In Chains
Out of all the albums to come from the windy city of Seattle, Alice In Chains's Dirt is probably one of the most metallic moments of the grunge era. The entire record feels like a slow dirge through mud, as Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell blend their voices to create angelic laments of the evils of drug abuse.
The record has some of the greatest tracks the band would ever write like "Rain When I Die" and "Rooster," but the interlude that occurs right in the middle of the record feels like it could have been left on the cutting room floor. As the story goes, Cantrell was playing this riff during the album production, which drove the band nuts. Rather than continue torturing his bandmates, Cantrell acquiesced and vowed to never play the riff again if he could include it on the album.
As it stands, "Iron Gland" definitely captures the despair of the record thanks to Slayer's Tom Araya providing backup vocals, but the initial beauty that came from all AOC tunes is conspicuously absent from this track. This might not be an absolutely horrid track, but it does feel like a song that has no business being on one of the best records of the 90's.
