12 Songs You Didn't Know Were Written About Famous People

6. John Mayer - Paper Doll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=565tXd1UyYI Written by: John Mayer; released in 2013. Who it's about: Pop star Taylor Swift. It was big news a few years back when Ms. Swift released her third studio album, Speak Now, which featured a song, aptly titled "Dear John," that was blatantly directed at rock musician John Mayer, one of Swift's ex-lovers. Mayer was not a fan, saying that he felt humiliated by the song, and that "It was a really lousy thing for her to do." However, despite his apparent annoyance in regards to Swift's song, Mayer himself was not above stooping to retaliatory song-writing. Paper Doll, a track off of his 2012 album Paradise Valley, is believed by many to be written as a rebuttal to Speak Now, and cite several lyrics as proof that Swift is the "paper doll" in question. Most notably would be the line "You're like twenty-two girls in one," which many take to be a reference to Swift's hit 22, in which she sings "I'm feeling twenty-two." Another lyrical link appears to exist between Dear John and Paper Doll: whereas Swift wrote "You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain," Mayer wrote "Someone's gonna paint you another sky." Though it seems likely that Paper Doll is directed at Swift, there was no revenge song on her most recent album, 1989, so perhaps the musical feud has ended.
